Michael Kovarik was an elementary school teacher, author of Healing Within: My Journey with Breast Cancer, and former host of the radio show Healing Journeys with Michael Kovarik on Dreamvisions 7 Radio Network.
Michael's breast cancer journey began when he discovered a lump near his left nipple, which was beginning to invert. Following a breast cancer diagnosis in January 2007, he underwent genetic testing and tested positive for the BRCA2 gene. After receiving treatment, Michael went into remission. Knowing the importance of keeping up with his doctor’s appointments and prioritizing self-care, Michael sought medical attention in 2015 when he experienced a persistent cough. A CAT scan revealed abnormal lymph nodes, and a biopsy later revealed his cancer had returned and metastasized to his lymph nodes, lungs and bones.
Michael was active within the metastatic breast cancer (mBC) community, participating in advocacy organizations, such as the Male Breast Cancer Coalition and MBC Alliance. He was a consistent contributor to Anti-Cancer Club, an online blogging community for people living with cancer and caregivers to share their stories and inspire others whose lives are touched by cancer. Michael served in a variety of roles at METAvivor, including as a Board Member, First Vice-President and President.
Sadly, Michael passed away from mBC on September 22, 2021, at the age of 65.
