Esther is a mother, grandmother and patient advocate within the Latina breast cancer community.
In 2006, at the age of 45, Esther was diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer (mBC). Following her diagnosis, her oncologist suggested she read a few books that provided helpful information on coping with a mBC diagnosis. While shopping for these books at a used bookstore, Esther picked one up at random and inside was a handwritten note on the first page which read, "Esther, to your good health. I hope you find this helpful." Esther says this experience not only strengthened her faith, but gave her the strength to endure and persevere.
Since her diagnosis, Esther has continued working with the Texas Historical Commission in Austin and got married in 2019. She and her husband live in the Austin area.
